磁带厂商Spectra有一种巨大的磁带产品T-Finity，最大容量可以达到3.6EB，这个是俺听说过的最大存储系统了。这个系统基本上就是几个机器人加上堆积如山的磁带。由于LTO-5单个磁带容量是1.5TB，因此有2400盒磁带，每盒磁带846米，则有约2000公里长的磁带。每盒磁带大约60$。IO能力不算太强，单盒磁带的最大带宽是140MBs/s.这个系统最大的能力达到600MB/s的样子（多个驱动）。这个能力只能用于离线备份，磁带可以保存15-30年，但是只能完成写1万多次的全带扫描。
貌似主要用于企业备份市场，现在并没有服务商用这个系统提供在线服务，曾经有媒体预测AWS的Glacier后台采用了磁带库，后来经过多人分析，认定这个是假命题，Glacier依然采用的是定制化的廉价磁盘系统。
JRH的评价是：
Tape has long been the media of choice for very cold workloads and tape remains an excellent choice at scale. What’s unfortunate, is that the scale point where tape starts to win has been going up over the years. High-scale tape robots are incredibly large and expensive. The good news is that very high-scale storage customers like Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are very well served by tape. But, over the years, the volume economics of tape have been moving up scale and fewer and fewer customers are cost effectively served by tape.
